In Blow-Up, the camera turns away from the flat abstract visual style of the tetralogy and renews its preoccupation with effects of depth. Antonioni said:

I worked a lot in Il deserto rosso with the zoom lens to try and get two-dimensional effects, to diminish the distances between people and objects, make them seem flattened against each other. This time, I'm trying to do something quite different. I've tried to lengthen the perspective, to give the impression of space between people and things.19
